Getting real challenged to get this chat stuff going. (All in prep for Theme Simplified Version 2.0). Spent trialing and erroring all day yesterday. (I know! I invented the words!) 🙂 I haven’t had my coffee yet. Got up too early. My brain was toasted yesterday.
I should have taken screenshots of what I was doing with the codes, the results, and the errors, but it was taking too much time.
Okay I think I am done with this. It’s the best I can do.
I am keeping the filter in the customized code – that converts the smileys. (For dumb people like me who convert smartphones into dumbphones and then lose all the keyboard emojis on their phones). At least on THIS portals chat – it WILL auto convert. (Smart) 🙂
So, the before and after,
BEFORE, the chat only pulls the Logged In UserName of the chatter.
GOAL: I wanted to put whatever we have (like onsite, not pulling it from the gravatar website) as an avatar, next to the name.
Currently, I got it configured to “Identicon” – auto generated icon (abstract stuff, I get dizzy with the G logo from gravatar, and don’t like the Mystery, or Monster, or Retro Icon / Avatar.)
TESTING SCENARIOS: Yesterday, I was obviously making too many mistakes from sleep deprivation and then the first wrong thing I did was get “kicked with negatronic crap in the morning”. When a person is exhausted, the patience level would be low. Like mine was yesterday.
And when it rains it pours.
But that was yesterday. Today’s a brand spanking new day. I am working in my balcony and watching the sun go up. It is darkest before dawn and light is coming out. God’s majestic baby blue, pinkish skies, this morning, no clouds.
God allowed me to sleep so soundly from exhaustion, and I got up my dorky self early this morning, with the renewed and revitalized patience of an ant carrying a load bigger than itself. Chugging and moving along. This life is not about perfection. My Christian walk is not about perfection. It’s about direction, towards God the Father.
When we pray for help, to be able to figure things out, He does give it. Provided that you don’t get foolish like work non stop and your brain can’t function anymore.
So, I prayed for decent sleep and I got it. \o/
When we pray, there are things God can do, and the things we MUST do first.
He already gave us our feet. We can’t really expect Him to put our own shoes on.
Just like Paul advised – to PUT ON, the Full Armour of God, because it is a daily battle. (Sometimes hourly).
And so I DIGRESSED, but not really, I am giving you an idea of HOW and WHY I got to figure things out.
What it can do is, it would pull the WordPress identicon, next to the UserName, if the person has a profile picture on the Forum, it should appear. If not, then the Identicon would be it.
Yesterday, I was testing “Current Username” but the result was it’s pulling THE SAME avatar, for all the conversations, for different users. (It was looking like your photo is a logo, type of thing.
OBSERVATIONS FROM TESTING:
– the chat messages would “jump” when you hover over the “username” which posts the timestamps.
– also the chat messages looked like a threaded layout, with bullets. And then when you hover over it, then that’s when they move to the left.
So I added a couple of characters to the code, so the end result is, Name, then next row would be the chat message.
It looks like “wasted space” – but I think it ended up looking okay. We have lots of space around this theme!
I added the code below to Lines 147-158 (to view full code, as an admin, look at the backend)

How about we put the 2 sites “Under Maintenance” for now?
Phone went completely dead earlier. Took a while to resurrect when my phone juice runs out.
If I put the 2 sites under maintenance, then others won’t be able to view my mistakes! I also have sent links to other people for some of the older articles, so it’s on the announcement anyway, that the portals are still on “Active Development”.
ALSO, I can’t FTP using my mobile phone. I’m keeping it as is. For now. Unless there’s a security issue?
