I received a phone call from a customer that ordered a humongous product from one of our DEMO websites.
I promised I was going to research the issue and call him back within an HOUR.
At first I thought it was a Tech Project, so I went and looked at our Payment Gateway portal.
NOPE. There were people buying products from the DEMO website!!!!
So, I looked at the SITEWIDE notice that stated “THIS IS A DEMO WEBSITE” …. and so I wondered.
Anyway, I issued COMPLETE REFUNDS and emailed the customers myself.
My Goodness!!! Those products weren’t those less than $200 products that costs so much to ship. IT WAS A DEMO SITE!!!!
Which got me into thinking ….
… those were organic “could have been” sales!
Anyway, well, we can all blame con-vid for that. My product suppliers based in California went bankrupt and their warehouse closed shop.
So there must have been a whole lot of Online Shops and Shop i fy stores that also went belly up.
Anyway, I spoke to one of those customers and told him he might find that same product on e ba y .
Got me into thinking too… well. I still have some inventory as well, I could put them up on those online shops – demo shops.
Oh well, we do the right thing when we can. I ISSUED 100% refund, and of course I got charged the transaction fees anyway, but that’s cost of doing business.
The other customers, I just issued refunds and sent emails as well.
Trouble shooting.
I tested the sites on Incognito, I guess what happens is, once the “Popup is clicked or closed that says, “This is a DEMO site. No Product will be shipped.”
The clients paid several hundred dollars anyway, and as I contacted my payment gateway vendor, I USE that account ALSO for I.T. Consulting Billable Hours, so, it HAS to be a LIVE Payment Gateway.
Monitor when all the refunds as processed and then just post a notice on those pages like:
Account Info
Shopping Cart Page
Product Page
that says THIS IS A DEMO WEBSITE, NO PRODUCT WILL BE SHIPPED.
Even the Payment Processor that I spoke with, who went to my website, said she also wanted to order! So I explained what happened. I wanted to make sure that I was on the phone with them as I am issuing those refunds, because these days we also have to be careful and work with ALL of our business vendors and always do the right thing by our customers.
So check your DEMO SHOP installations – make sure that ASIDE from the “Clickable storewide notice”, Just ALSO hard code it into those webpages as well.

CrisW : Well, in fairness, those products USED to be there for sale if CON VID did not break the business of my product suppliers
CrisW : And so those products USED to be quite sellable since they were unique

CrisW : Yes, have to get basics, like Date of Birth, Sex at birth, Tobacco use. Then if you want it, I’ll have you e-sign the Illustration so I can attach it with your application

CrisW : Yes, because the Insurance Company wants to make sure you are informed about what you are buying.

CrisW : And I designed it that way so no other admin can see what’s in those forms because they go straight to my inbox and I designed it to collect METADATA so there’s proof on who sent it and from where.
